Laura B ER Chapter 11

Laura Berg
Chapter Summary: As humans, we often feel it necessary to fill our days doing as many things as possible. These "superhuman" mind-sets often lead to overwhelming feelings. At this point we may find ourselves feeling as though we are constantly failing. We need to face our inner judges which cause us to feel this way. Instead of allowing them to overcome us, we can stand up to them and over-dramatize our situation so that we can find humor in it. Ristad also discovered through experimentation that if you are consciously trying to fail, you will be more likely to succeed then you were before. For some reason, when the brain and body are given permission to fail, it also allows them to excel. By helping ourselves understand that failure is not something to be fought against but instead a way to gain information, we become more aware and capable of succeeding.
Key Concept: "When we give ourselves permission to fail, we at the same time give ourselves permission to excel."
Key Terms: Permission, failure, success
Making Connections: My whole life, I have been terrified of failure. I have filled my life with so many things bent on the mindset that I will succeed! I have also felt the frustration and fear that comes when I realize I can't figure something out or I'm falling behind. Giving yourself permission to fail is something that I had never conceptualized, but it does make sense. I also look forward to experimenting with attempting failure so that I can learn more about myself when given the permission to fail.
