Chapter 4 Naked
Voice Summary:
Summary: This
chapter talks about how to speak with clarity. This is important in singing if
we want to communicate effectively in singing. Phase one is to strip down to
your most natural and "naked" sound. Phase two involves projecting
your natural sound. Singing requires projecting the sound, and so this helps to
create more resonance. Phase three involves speaking with line. Musicians can
call this singing legato. But it involves a consistency of sound. Phase four
adds another level of complexity. It involves putting 2 and 3 together on
pitch. This gets us closer to what actual singing sounds like. Phase five
involves the final step of working on vowels. It is important to take our
vernacular speech, which can not be very refined in vowel sounds, and turn
those unrefined vowels into something more refined. This will ultimately help
us the most in having a more refined sound.
Key Concept: I need
to work through each phase before moving onto to a new phase. This will help me
to get the most refined sound, and work on increasing the bright side of my
sound.
Key Terms:
Vernacular Speech, Projection, Speaking with Line, Refined Vowels
Making Connections:
I like this approach to working on vowels and speaking. I need to work through
each step individual before I move onto the next step!
