Jaron Putnam Naked Voice Chapter 3 Summary

Jaron Putnam Naked Voice Chapter 3 Summary

Chapter 3 Naked Voice Summary:

Summary: Breathing. Breathing is also a basic instinctual thing that humans do. It happens as a precursor to natural breath. Smith believes that breath should be something that is driven by what is being sung. You don't need a full breath for every phrase you sing. Each phrase is different, in length, height, and intensity of text. The singer should instinctively recognize what is happening and breathe accordingly. He said some interesting things I like about exhalation. He has the idea that flow of air is the most important for good breathing. He doesn’t like the word support. Because he feel s like that implies a sort of constriction that should not exist in the exhalation process. The air should flow naturally from the lungs without being held in our expelled.

Key Concept: Breathing is something that can help us in singing, but it should be a skill that is developed to become instinctual. It is important to get to the point where we don't think about it too much.

Key Terms: Inspiration, Exhalation, Flow of Air

Making Connections: I would like to try and apply this concept of "air flow" in exhalation. Everything should be easy without pushing as I sing, It should all happen naturally. For the first time, I think I understand the "feeling" that I want as I sing higher pitches. I tighten and try to give support, but I think what I need to think is freedom and flow instead! I can't wait to try this.
