Jared Daley TNV Chapter 4
Summary-
Chapter 4 is all about our first invention; Simply speaking simply. Simply Speaking is learning to speak with clarity. I like how profound he got concerning the words we use. Words can sometimes cover the truth we want to communicate. Our words in our speaking voices are entangled. They should be free. Singing should be even more free, but it's not often the case. We learn about the five phases to get us to simply speak. Phase one is Vernacular speaking. Vernacular speaking is speaking at our most natural form of speech, the way we were raised and taught. When we find the natural center of our voice is feels naked and vulnerable. We first receive the exercise of saying [ni] [ne] [na] [no] [nu]. we must speak the most natural vowels. In the second phase we speak with projection. It's very similar to phase one except we think about speaking the exercise to someone in the next room. This increases the intensity in our speech but not pressure. Projected speech becomes clearer. In Phase three we are told to speak with line, which is a continuity of sound from one point to another. This is often referred to as legato. Phase four we combine what we have learned and try to speak with projection and line on Pitch. We must find a pitch where we most naturally phonate at when speaking. Usually that's where we feel most free, simple and unentangled. Phase five is refining the vowel. Dipthongs are the enemy! Curse my parents for teaching me english in a laid back californian accent. Forming the vowels correctly is the other big challenge. Instead of typing how to form every single vowel correctly I'll just say that it is something each of us needs to devote a lot more time to.
Key Terms: Vernacular
Key Concept: When we find the natural core of our speaking voice we only need to add sustained pitches to sing freely. Vowels are the devil.
Connection: My teachers were not kidding when they said they've been years on their vowels. It is ridiculously important to get them down.
