Jared Daley Master Class 10/1/13

Jared Daley Master Class 10/1/13

Amber Denslow
Her breath got gaspier the further along she got in the piece. In the beginning she was doing pretty well. In Tune, the higher notes weren't as open and resonant as her middle voice. "Mother" was super resonant! Loved it. There were some sharp moments. I could understand most words. Could use a little more expression. it wasn't unpleasant, just would have like to see it more in her eyes. Cindy suggested uses imaginary keys. In 20th century music you have to have some frame of reference so it have some coherency. I feel like having some sort of "do" to look for really helped make sense of the music and she performed it well after that. Overall very good effort for such difficult music. There were some really vibrant moments

Mariah Boyer
She had a couple of really good breaths right in the beginning, but then they started to become shallower. It was in tune for the most part. "a" vowels were really open and resonant. watch German vowels. They are hard! Needed crisper consonants to understand all the words. Not bad expression could have used more in the eyes. Cindy suggested singing like the voice is just a part of the score. You need to know the piece and be the director. You have to sing like the words are true, like you actually believe them. Overall is was a nice performance, definitely need more expression and that will come will knowing the piece.

Ben Shaw
First few breaths were really good. In the middle of the middle of the piece they got a little gaspy. There were no major intonation problems. It was a great sound, a little tense at times. very nice tone. Pretty good diction. it was pretty clear to understand. The performance was a little bit stiff. Had a very fierce expression. Cindy said it sounded like you were working too hard. She suggested different postures and using your lower body more. The Scarf suspension analogy seemed to be most effective. Overall great sound, just stiff and tense! Loosen up!
