Emily F. SS intro part II: Chiaroscuro means "bright-dark". This would be the ideal balance of sound in singing. The inventions in the next chapters will help us understand and hopefully achieve some of this balance. The differences in speech and singing would fall into the following categories: projection, line, defined vowels, and the body being the whole instrument.
Key concept: Chiaroscuro is the ideal balance of bright and dark in singing.
Key terms: chiaro, scuro, core, space, projection, line
Making connections: Over the last couple of years, I've been exposed to this idea of the body being my whole instrument. It's so true! But I forget, and try to cut corners, by not engaging my whole body. I'm interested to see what will be in the next chapters--how to get my singing voice to be more like my speaking voice, more authentic.
