Emily F. masterclass 10/22

Emily F. masterclass 10/22:
Jake Spjute: At the beginning of the song, your chest was moving a lot, and breaths were audible. Throughout the song, the breathing got better and lower, I saw good lower body expansion. When you sang the parts you liked better, the technique was better. I noticed a lot of "alligator" jaw--maybe this is a song to practice with a pencil to help you get that back resonant space? There were intonation problems (flat) on the extended notes, particularly on crescendo, and when you ascended half steps. When I saw you sing from the side, I noticed  that you seemed to lead with your jaw. Timbre was rich and warm and round and full--beautiful, as always. Sometimes the emotion was there, but  mostly it looked like you were concentrating on words and technique. Cindy's ideas of the "magic unicorn horn of sound" and singing everything from the same place as your favorite bits were helpful.
Luke Shepherd: Lovely diction! I understood and believed every word. It was obvious that you had a clear picture in your mind of what you wanted to communicate. Something I saw, and I don't really know what this was, but it looked like there was some real tension in your upper body. Like when you sang high notes, it was almost like you squeezed inward? Timbre was rich and warm, but a bit muffled/airy. Cindy talked about being like a bird ready for take-off, stance-wise. And "we don't want to see you feel something, we want to see you do something" (communicate).
Laura Berg: Your sound is richer and fuller than I've heard before! Nice! The "ee" vowel was particularly resonant and ringy, but the "oh" and "ah" vowels sounded a little swallowed. I thought, "magic unicorn horn of sound!" It would be lovely to have those vowels all be consistent in quality. Your jaw looks really loose and easy. I couldn't tell about your breathing, but did it feel a little under-energized? Sometimes you had really good emotion, but it kind of slipped in and out of consistency. Diction and intonation seemed really good. When Cindy had you sing just the short notes, the quality and consistency of your sound improved.
