Emily F. SS 5

Emily F. SS 5: Letting air pass through the vocal folds without pushing or engaging the vocal folds is key to having released air flow and consistent sound. To achieve this sensation, there are three phases to the invention: the downward sigh, the siren, and the descending five-tone scale. These are exercises that we've all done in lessons, but maybe not exactly in this way.
Key concept: We need to feel free-flowing air pass through the vocal folds without a sensation of resistance.
Key terms: vocalis muscle, overadduction, falsetto, resistance
Making connections: It was pretty fascinating to listen to women sing such low notes! I didn't know it was possible. This idea of releasing all of my air, and having no sensation of resistance is scary to me. I'm used to controlling my voice. Of course it's not giving me the results I want, but just letting my air out without manipulating it seems totally unnatural. I tried singing with the CD, and my onsets were terrible compared with the other singers. I have rough onsets a lot, and it may be due to my habit of manipulating air flow.
