Emily F. SS 4

Emily F. SS 4: "Free singing is less entangled than speech." What an interesting idea! But, "vernacular speech usually has less entanglement than most people's singing voices." That would be me, for sure. Going through these steps is an interesting process: vernacular speech, speaking with projection, speaking with line, speaking with projection and line on pitch, and refining the vowels. The idea that this should be disentangled and free is exciting and overwhelming. Refining the vowels seems to be the hardest part of this, at least for me. I do way more than I should with every vowel. And apparently, based on this chapter, everyone has tongue issues.
Key concept: "Free singing is less entangled than speech."
Key terms: entanglement, articulators, refined vowels
Making connections: I've been trying out elevating and elongating my speech in practice, and it's interesting to see where I switch my voice into something pretentious and not me. As I went through these exercises, I found the same difficulties, particularly when it comes to refining the vowels. I always thought of myself as someone who had really nice vowels, and in choirs it worked well. But to get the sounds I make I'm really entangling a lot of stuff! What I do is not simple at all. It's familiar and automatic now, but I'm starting to see how much extra, unnecessary, unhelpful work I do.
