Emily F. ER 10: There are a million systems and rules out there for everything. Just as each student has their own style of learning, each teacher will have their own style of teaching. We have to be able to find our own beliefs and helps and truths to be able to teach effectively. Also, we need plenty of exposure to different systems and experimentation to understand how to teach different students.
Key concept: We need to empty our "bag of truths" until we choose what to put in it.
Making connections: I've had only a couple of voice teachers, and I've learned different things from them. I remember my high school choir teacher, who gave me some coaching, telling me that I had a big voice and to be careful. She also wanted me to sing more "forward". So now, when Laurie tells me that I can give more, sing louder, it's different. And she works with me more about space than placement. While all of the things that my different teachers have told me are probably true, I need to be able to absorb what is most important for me now, and experiment to discover what ends up feeling true for me.
