Emily Cottam, Vocal Recital Hour Critiques, 10/3/13

Breathing is like a bucket--don’t forget to support on the higher notes. Intonation is good. Timbre is light, bright, and slightly breathy on higher notes. Diction is good as far as I can tell--the vowels could be a little purer and rounder. Expressiveness is good and there’s variation, but I think it could be a little more engaged, especially in the eyes. Overall, I thought the performance was very good because it was very calmly executed and the intonation was very good.

Aubrianne Dunn
Breathing is like a bucket--lots of sternal movement. The timbre is very breathy and in the back of the throat. The intonation is good. On the higher notes, air becomes extremely cut off because of throat tension. Diction is good--all of the words are understanding. Avoid spreading the lips too far and use the front of the tongue to push the tone forward, rather than raising the back of it to cut off the tone. The Expressiveness was good and calm, but I think it could have been a little more varied. Overall, I thought the piece was well prepared, but her tone was really pushed back, and I wish it was a little more forward.

Brooklyn Dyer
Breathing is like a bucket, with slightly audible gasps. The intonation is generally very good, but on the higher notes, she had a tendency to go a notch sharp, but I think it was nerves. The timbre is bright, pushed back slightly in the throat. Watch the chin, it’s being pushed forward quite a bit. The expressiveness of the piece was good and happy, but I think you could’ve been a little more varied. Overall, I thought the performance was good because it was well prepared, but I think she needed a little more breath support. Second Attempt: The breath support was much stronger this time. The dynamic contrast was much better as well, and the musical expression was also very nice.
