Emily C.: SOHH, Ch. 15

A Soprano On Her Head: Chapter 15
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: Almost everything we do in our normal lives involves the use of improvisation (i.e. speech). That’s why improvisation based on rhythms and patterns that are related to human speech seem so fluid and so much more spontaneous, rather than meticulously planned and structured. “Interesting improvisation doesn’t grow out of subdued politeness, but out of the energy of authentic emotions.” “We live our lives in narrow boundaries, often unaware of the characters waiting to peek out from behind the curtains and be recognized. The characters are not phony--they are real parts of ourselves wanting expression.”

Key Concepts: Improvisation is in everything we do--we are spontaneous beings, and by applying this concept to performance, you can make music so much more human, relatable, and authentic.

Key Terms: improvisation

Making Connections: To me, Ristad described improvisation as almost meaning “speech-like,” which is natural and spontaneous. So I think the reason why “singing as you speak” is so important is because it makes the performance so much more human, and that’s what resonates with the audience--how relatable it is.
