Emily C.: SOHH, Ch. 14

A Soprano On Her Head: Chapter 14
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: “When we withhold the fullness of our capabilities, we diminish those capabilities.” By saying, “So you were a flop?” we give ourselves permission to make mistakes and relieve some of the unnecessary pressure on us to be perfect. When practicing, it’s important to always be open to new ideas and exploring new facets of your voice, because techniques sometimes become outdated, and if we continue to  rely on those old practice patterns, your level of skill will remain at that same level. “Permission to fail and image of success are not contradictory.”

Key Concepts: Giving yourself the permission to make mistakes relieves you of unnecessary pressures to be perfect.

Key Terms: Permission to fail, image of success

Making Connections: I often focus so much on the potential mistakes that I make that I forget to visualize the positive aspects of a performance, so when I get up to perform, I find it difficult to become emotionally involved because I worry so much. I can use what I learned in this chapter to remind myself that, by freeing myself from the pressures of being perfect, I can focus more on the image of success than on my potential mistakes.
