Summary: In the second invention, Smith discusses how to use free flowing air to achieve greater oscuro. Once we can speak with a clear and free sound, we need air that flows consistently in every range to support that. The way he suggest to start is with falsetto (for both men and women.) Falsetto does involve vocal fold vibration, but only the nerveless outer layers; therefore, we can't feel it happening! In practicing falsetto, we allow the air to flow our naturally without controlling it
1. The Downward Sigh: We start in that falsetto place, and gently bring it down into the low range with a sigh like sound. Allow vibration of that not falsetto place come back in naturally
2. The Siren: Always maintaining the sigh feeling, we start low and siren up into the falsetto range. The vocal folds are flabby and loose when beginning the siren. And it's not important how high you get, but how you get high! A breathy sensation is healthy, and there should be no sensation of resistance.
3. The Descending 5 Note Scale: Once we get to the peak of the siren, we come down on a five note scale! You maintain the sigh open sense, but without holding the sensation there. But as you descend in pitch, keep the energy up!
Key Terms:
Consistent conditioning
back space
vocalis muscles
holding
sensation of resistance
falsetto
Key Concepts: The them I got from this Chapter: Holding anything ever is not cool.
Making Connections: After I read this chapter, I got into the practice and tried some new things. I noticed that just having the concepts in my mind helped my singing get more free.
