Summary: Speech as it comes naturally to us is what Smith calls the source of utterance. The source of utterance involves our whole physical and emotional selves, and singing should come from the same source. When we speak, we rarely hurt our voices and we express who we truly are; why not do that in singing? In addition, when we speak, we rarely listen to ourselves during the process. Singing should be no different. Since singing is a method by which we communicate, we need to model after our natural way of communicating: speech.
Key Terms:
source of utterance
vernacular
Key Concepts: If we can connect our singing back to the source of utterance, meaning our natural vernacular speech, we can improve our singing faster.
Making Connection: I have noticed that since Thomas Glenn brought up the concept of relating singing to speech, it has been a great help to me. This chapter only confirms what I should continue doing; connecting speech to my singing.
