Chapter Summary 15 SOHH Jaron Putnam

SOHH Chapter 15 Summary:

This chapter is awesome! I love the idea of improvising, and I feel like this fits a lot with what I do as I play Jazz music on the piano- Improvisation still freaks me out… A lot sometimes, less in other cases, because there are rules to it, and stuff can sound bad… But what we need to learn is that improvisation in its pure form is somethat that we as human beings are naturally good at. It is something we do a lot, and it is a representation of who we are at that specific moment. It can be a reflection of our emotions; if, if we choose to have it be that way. This is important!! We can't trick our bodies. They are good at it naturally and if we over think it, it will make it sound bad. Good improvisation can make a connection between us and our instrument. This is important to be a good performer.

Key Concept: Make improvisation something you do. It will help you as you study and work on other things.

Key Terms: Free-wheeling improvisation, Structured improvisation

Making Connections: Like I said above- this is so applicable to me as an instrumentalist! I think it would benefit me in the vocal realm as well. I need to spend time improvising and getting to know my instrument better.
