Caitlin Craig ER Chapter 14

Chapter Summary: As musicians we are often perfectionists.  If we flop, we flop, but we still have worth.  Improvement and truly great performances can only happen if we trust our input, and allow ourselves to fail.  This trust in ourselves is what determines our potential for greatness.  We must not fear failing.  Once we embrace the possibility of failure, we must give ourselves the proper image of success. The fear of failing is what blocks learning, and succession.
Key Terms: improvisation, flop.
Key Concepts: Trustworthy input reaps trustworthy memory. Trust your practice.  Treat yourself and your body kindly.  "Pay attention to how it feels. Track down the physical sensations. See if you can intensify what you are feeling."
Making Connections: This chapter was very insightful for me.  I think that I am often way too hard on myself.  I need to be more kind to my body, and embrace the possibility of failure.  I find that my best singing comes when I don't care about what comes out or have focused on awareness rather than trying.  Even though I have many vocal faults I still have worth, and I still have potential for greatness if I can just trust myself and my practice.  This is something that I really want to focus on with my future students.  Failure is not the end, but the beginning of our journey of learning.  I want them to love singing and continue to love singing, and not see it as something that causes insecurities.
