Brooke's SS Chapter 2 Summary-
We use our whole self when speaking. We use our physical self, emotional, acoustical, spiritual, and psychological self. Speaking its self is very complex. We convey emotion by the WAY we speak and the inflections of the voice. Speaking before we sing is very effective, it enables the singer to "sense the constant buzzing vibration of the voice, and we come to understand that we must continually create that vibration to speak". Our "vernacular" voices are adapted by our environment and is the easiest way for us to speak. But it is just the beginning point. From this point we have to refine our vernacular singing for to do a correct classical singing voice.
Key Concepts- When speaking we involve our whole self. Speaking is creation.
Key Terms- Source of utterance- basic idea, emotion or thought deep in our souls that must find a mode of expression. Vernacular speech- using the sounds, accents, and idiosyncrasies of their original, native tongue.
Connections- My voice teacher, Thomas Glenn, and Cindy have all used this technique of speaking before. It definitely works for me but now that I understand why I think I will be more willing to actually use it in the practice room.
