Ben Shaw SS introduction summary

Chapter summary: The introduction to this book ties singing to other aspects of life. The key to singing is to sing with one's "true voice;" one's "authentic" voice. The key to performing is also authenticity; to give the audience a true part of the performer and his/her experience.  The quest for authenticity extends beyond music, however. The author talks about his quest to find out what he truly believed on a spiritual level; his authentic beliefs. Not only does the quest for authenticity extend beyond singing, but the application of authenticity in various areas combine to make one more authentic (BEing authentic). In singing, one must BE authentic: "our voices are an expression of the deepest reaches of our soul."
Key points: Singing well is singing with one's authentic voice. The quest for authenticity is ongoing for us all.
Key terms: "authenticity"
Making connections: What this introduction means for me is that the key to singing with my true voice is to be authentic.
