Ben Shaw SS chapter 6 summary

Chapter summary: This chapter is about the third invention; balancing. This is all about finding the right balance (dark tone, light tone, etc.) in singing. Sometimes, this means over correction so as to find the balance. There are two exercises that can help with this. The first one is the arpeggio, which is singing 1-3-5-3-1 on [ni] [ne] [na] [no] [nu]. This help if one allows the air to take over. The second is vowel definition. It is important to be clear and precise with vowels because it un-entangles our vowels, thus making easier the flow of air.
Key points: In singing, balance is ideal.
Key terms: chiaroscuro, passaggio
Making connections: I could strike a better balance. I tend to have a darker tone, which can sometimes sound swallowed. It would sound more clear if I was able to incorporate more brightness.
