Ben Shaw SS chapter 1 summary

Chapter summary: This chapter describes the idea of "wholistic singing." Before that, though, Smith talks about the mechanism of the singer (parts of body used when singing), and touches on other scientific things such as the Bernoulli Effect. The wholistic approach (not, as he says, misspelled) is about considering all of the aspects of human experience. This includes the spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional aspects. This approach is better than a conventional approach because it deals with the question "why," therefore working to solve the problem and not just the symptoms.
Key points: Singing encompasses all of the aspects of the human experience. Because of this, it's important to be prepared in all of the afore mentioned areas.
Key terms: Wholistic approach, conventional approach.
Making connections: Although it's hard to imagine one's spiritual experience as a factor in singing, it most certainly is. In these areas of human experience, I could better prepare myself as a performer.
