Amber, chapter 13-16 summaries
Chapter 13
Overcoming nerves was addressed. Methods included giving ourselves permission or be fully nervous until that storm blew itself out, and role playing as a confident performer.
Key concepts: 1) Turn your nerves to your advantage by letting them run their course. 2) BE THE DIVA! 3) Conquer fear of falling behind the orchestra by adopting the attitude that it is more of a matter of them keeping up with you.
Connection: I actually applied the technique during Thursdays recital hour, to give myself permission to be afraid/nervous/anxious all the way. After about a minute the anxiety bubble burst and 99% of it all washed away. It worked! It really worked!
Chapter 14
“So you were a flop!” Permission is granted to be human a fail sometimes. You can fail many times at many things and still NOT be a flop as a person.
Key concept: Stop freaking out about upcoming performances and just enjoy the process along the way.
Connection: I used to think that I had to be perfect in order to have any love at all in this life. Then I realized that the people who were “perfect” were resented by many and eyed with suspicion (at least from the awful crowd I associated with at the time). That's not love. I'll just be the best me I can be and accept my failings. I'll take love, thanks.
Chapter 15
An improve clinic was held to help musicians with cutting loose, letting go, and giving a more natural and authentic performance. They were dropping the burden of self consciousness that was getting in their way.
Key Concepts: 1) find your own interpretation to connect with the music. 2) find a way to be the music, to evoke the feelings of it rather than just being a record and playback device for it.
Connection: Now the song analysis forms we are given make even more sense with the portions where we are to find our own words for the text and our own perspective on the meanings and what we want to evoke.
Chapter 16
You can have all of the information and advice in the world; but, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans unless you find your own way through it with your own view.
Key concept: Stop getting caught up in expectations and just sing.
Key word: Insight
Connection: I need to find a way for my students to regard their opinion just as much (if not more that) mine.
