Chapter Summary: We love the same experiences that terrify
us. We all deal with nerves but performing still excites us and creates our own
insanity (expecting that our preparation will lead us to a different reaction
to performing, and it doesn’t). A moment
of uncertainty will open the door for our judges. We have to be careful of our
judges because they are sneaky. We need
to be aware of how are bodies response before and during a performance. It can
help to push our nervous symptoms to the point where they can’t go any further.
We need to reverse our nervous symptoms by intensifying them. By doing so, the
symptoms will eventually go away because they would not be able to proceed any
further. Keep the sense of curiosity and a “daredevil attitude" to succeed
before and during a performance. Use your imagination to get the results you
want. We all have nerves, but we need to
take ourselves out of our mind and put ourselves in our body. Make a connection
between you and the adversity. Be ready for success and build faith into your
body.
Key Concept: View the energy of adrenalin as a positive
rather than a hindrance.
Key Terms:
Unnecessary Tightness, daredevil attitude, increased power.
Connection: I deal with nervousness all the time, even in
voice recital hour and master class; unfortunately, to a point where I try to
avoid them both. We spend months preparing pieces for a performance that will
last less than 10 minutes (juries). My question is… for what? For a grade?
Self-fulfillment? Or the day when we can read all the professors comments about
how we did, only to find out, they pointed out all the issues that we were
trying to overcome for the whole semester! I never thought about intensifying
my symptoms because there is no way I can imagine them being worse. But
everything has a limit right?
