Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch.10

Sarah Brenay - SOHH - Ch. 10
Chapter Summary: In music there are countless different approaches to technique, most of which contradict each other. We need to forget all the contradictory methods we've been given and start over fresh to figure our what is really effective for us. Every one is different, so it makes sense for everyone to have a different perspective on technique. It is best to let yourself explore and figure things our for yourself, rather than having a teacher hand feed you ever answer. It's important to realize that even this concept doesn't apply as well to everyone. Some people prefer hard and fast rules to discovery, but everyone can benefit from questioning what they know and exploring new concepts.
Key Concepts: There is no right or wrong way to accomplish something, especially in music. Each person has their own way of thinking, and therefore their own technique. Before we can teach, we need to understand how we learn.
Making Connections: I too am often frustrated with the number of contradicting techniques I've learned. This chapter reminded me that what really matters is that I learn to teach myself. If we are aware of what's going on in our own bodies we can figure out what methods work best for us.
