Sarah Boucher VRH Critiques 10/10
Cailtin Craig: Caitlin looked and acted very professional. I liked that sense of calm about her as she performed. She was very dedicated emotionally and I loved that her mood shifted when it should in the piece. Her tone is very unique and I really like it. There were occasionally spots that were a bit breathy, particularly in the higher range. I thought her breathing looked pretty good. Her inhalation was good but I think she could work on suspension and keeping her voice "riding the breath". I also noticed that she had a tendency to draw her chin back when she sings lower and furrow her eyebrows, just something to watch :)
Brooke Myers: Brooke's tone on those high notes was ringing and big. She blew me away with those. Occasionally I thought her tone was a little forced, mostly on lower phrases. That lower range is tough for high sopranos so I understand that it is sometimes hard to find that "bing" on lower notes. I loved that Brooke was dedicated to the piece. Even when she forgot her words she just kept going and made it look like the composer wrote "ahs" in. That is the mark of a true professional! Her breaths were gaspy and high, due to nerves. Remember to relax a bit :) (easier said then done, I know!) Maybe it would help you relax to think of the character as more smooth and sexy instead of flirty and bubbly?
Alyssa Robinson: Alyssa had a very clear voice. It worked well for the style of the piece. However, I think that she needs to free up her sound a bit. She didn't sing with vibrato and I think that allowing the voice to spin would help with those notes that were flat. I understood most of her words, but think that she could do more consonants. Her breathing was bucket like but I liked that he body was still and overall fairly relaxed. She had a very nice expression on her face but I think that she could have been more specific and done more with the piece emotionally.
Sara Low: Sara did not have a lot of extraneous movement while she was singing and she seemed fairly relaxed. However, I thought that she needed more energy behind her sound. Her breathing was not very grounded, making her sound seem forced and pressed. When she sang for Thomas Glenn, her tone was a lot more free, bright and relaxed. Maybe it would help her to apply what she does on that piece (I think it was a Handel?) to this different style? To think lighter with more energy?
