Mariah SS 6
Chapter Summary: Singers need to learn how to balance between the chiaro and oscuro of their voice. Most singers favor one side of their voice and need to develop the balance. When singers first start to work the balance, they should exercise it in the their middle range. Once they are more comfortable with this balance, they can begin to integrate it into their higher and lower regions. "Consistent airflow is the key to maintaining a balance, and good vowel definition is the key to consistent airflow." Simply speaking simply strengthens the chiaro side and free-flowing air develops the oscuro parts of the voice. When we balance these sounds, we try to work on both techniques at once.
Key Concepts: To develop a balance in the voice, singers need to refine their vowels and have free-flowing air to aid both the chiaro and oscuro parts of the voice.
Key Terms: balance, passagio
Making Connections: I need to figure out where I normally sing in the chiaroscuro balance and work to make it more balanced. I need to work on simply speaking simply and free-flowing air so I can find a balance and have more resonance in my singing.
