Chapter Summary: Speaking is our main form of communication in all aspects of life. It is physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. When we speak we pay little attention to the sound of our voice and mainly on what we are trying to get across. In speaking we can communicate so many different things with one word depending on the tone we use. Many singers focus so much on the sound they are trying to make that they lose focus on the message of the song. Our natural way of speaking can become "contaminated" by our environment. We need to find our true speaking voice so that it can more easily carry into our singing voice. Beginning with our natural way of speaking, we can relax and find an easy way of speaking the text before we refine our words.
Key Concepts: Singers need to find a way to focus less on the sound they are making and more on what they are trying to communicate. When we are connected with our primary speaking voice, we can transfer this raw communication more efficiently to our singing.
Key Terms: source of utterance, environmental contaminants
Making Connections: I need to remember that communicating the message of the song is just as important or even more important than the tone I am trying to create. I need to evaluate my speaking voice and see if it is truly my natural way of speaking. I need to speak the text more casually and then refined before I try to sing it.
