Mariah Masterclass 10/8
Brad Summers
Brad has a very warm, vibrant and mature timbre and his diction was great. His resonance was especially good on his "o" vowels. He shifted around a lot while introducing his song and snapped a couple times throughout the song. He tended to have short, quick bucket breaths. There was one high note that seemed constricted and his neck looked really tense during parts of the song. During masterclass, Cindy helped him with his expression of the song. When he performed, he seemed very serious and there wasn't much depth. Cindy had Brad sing happier and list his favorite things while singing. She advised to have something specific in mind so your eyes are always alive. She talked about how the audience wants to see your honest self in the performance. After she had Brad work on these things, his performance really improved. The feeling of the song intensified and I understood the message more.
Sarah Gee
Sarah's expression began right when the music began instead of waiting until she started to sing like many singers do. I really appreciated this and it pulled me into the moment right when the first note was played. Her expression was really incredible during this performance. I liked that she wasn't afraid to use her arms for expression. There was one time when she mess up and she gave it away with her face. I would have had no idea she had though if she hadn't given that facial expression. She had some bucket breathing and a tense neck. Her timbre was very lovely and glassy but maybe a tad swallowed. Cindy told her to focus on two words: availability and awareness. This helped Sarah create a more powerful sound.
Sarah Brenay
Sarah had good intonation and a clear timbre. She had some shallow breathing which created a timid sound. Her expression was relaxed but there could be more story-telling. She also tended to tap her toe while singing. Cindy helped her to sing the vowel on the beat; the accompanist will hear the vowel more than the consonant. Singing the vowel on the beat will help the singer and accompanist stay together better. Cindy also advised to practice with a metronome to help be more rhythmically accurate.
