Mariah Master Class 10/22

Mariah Master Class 10/22
Jake Spjute: Jake had a very powerful timbre and nice dynamics for this song. He held pretty still and didn't have any distracting, nervous movements. There was one high note that was strong, but seemed a little disconnected. He had good diction and great expression in the voice but could have more expression in the face. For masterclass, Cindy asked "what is your favorite moment?" She also worked Jake's glitch on his crescendo. The decrescendo for the specific phrase was especially interesting, so Cindy suggested to crescendo for 1/3 of the phrase and decrescendo for 2/3 of the phrase. On the higher note for this phrase, it was great and powerful, but I could see he was tight because I could see him instantly relax when the note ended. Cindy helped Jake to build phrases by crescendoing and wanted him to feel it in the body and emotion rather telling him something to do.
Luke Shepherd: Luke seemed very relaxed and had good diction and expression. His breathing was bucket-like and he had a light timbre. His intonation was good except for one moment on the word "cherry" I noticed it was a little off. His ee vowels could also be more rounded. Cindy explained in masterclass that you need to be like a bird while you sing and lean forward slightly like you're about to take off in flight. You shouldn't be perfectly perpendicular while you sing. Cindy liked Luke's specificity of each phrase, instead of a general mood.
Laura Berg: Great job! You introduced yourself and your piece very well and had a clear, mature, and vibrant tone while singing. Your neck seemed to tense up at times and your arms were tense at the beginning but you let them relax as you went along. I really liked your timbre; it was very powerful. I loved that you were looking at the audience but you tended to sway your head left to right a little too much. You could pick a section to sing to, stay there a little while and then choose a different section. This might help the swaying. Your expression was good as well. During masterclass, Cindy helped Laura to not skate across the shorter notes. She had Laura sing only the shorter notes in the song for an exercise to help have vowel presense and vibrancy even in these small notes. Laura also worked on singing with line and being less percussive. She did very well at applying the things that Cindy taught her.
