Mariah ER 13
Chapter Summary: When we get nervous, we need to do the exact opposite of trying to suppress these nerves. Trying to suppress the feeling only makes it worse. We need to recognize the nervous symptoms are there but try to intensify them. The more we try to intensify them, the more they will fade. When we admit to ourselves that we are nervous instead of avoiding the fact, we can channel these nerves into excitement because both of these emotions have many of the same physical feelings that go with them. Instead of paying attention to "formulas" we believe aided our performance that day, we need to focus on "solid information" about how our bodies were working during that moment. We need to sense our strengths and weaknesses. Once we are aware of these things, our flaws begin to lessen. When we are confident and have a "dare-devil attitude" our performances become more confident and passionate.
Key Concept: Don't try to suppress nerves but instead try to intensify them, therefore making them lessen. Pay more attention to information than formulas and emotion than constant accuracy.
Key Terms: dare-devil attitude, role of conductor, permission
Making Connections: I need to stop trying to suppress my nervousness when it happens but rather convert it into excitement. I need to really go for emotion instead of perfect accuracy sometimes to really be able to feel the message of the song.
