Luke Shepherd MC Critiques 10/15/2013

Brooke Meyers: Very open, resonant tone. Some of the phrases sounded "not fluid" and disconnected. That was probably due to the register changes and the leaps to high notes. When Cindy said "You just have to believe God that the note will come" she absolutely nailed it. You were "dragging yourself up to the high pitch" and that caused it to sound pressed or heavy. It sounded much more free after Cindy's help. Good job!

Laekin Burgess: "na-na-na-nee-na-na-na-Ich" was a fun exercise... :) You have a lot of energy in your sound which is super helpful to your colorful timbre and for a frenetic piece like this. I like the buzzy, ringy quality of your voice with this song. The expression was probably stifled or stiff because you were focusing a lot on the words and rhythms because normally you're very expressive. Cindy helped you to find the operatives in the text which made your phrasing better and made the text easier to understand. Fun performance!

Emily Floyd: The timbre was light and not focused. I want to hear some depth of emotion and connection with your lower body. Cindy helped you a ton by pointing out that you were singing off your speaking voice (what have we been reading about authenticity?) This is something I'm spending a lot of time on in my own practice and I think it would help you with this piece. Speaking and elongating the text will help you to connect the words to the music and the body to the sound.
