A lot of what I am doing wrong is making sure I am singing on the gesture of inhalation. I need to prepare by taking smooth breaths.
One thing I have noticed before and has been made apparent in the video is that I need to focus on making the placement of my intonation more forward rather than back and down. I have a very dark quality to my voice and it needs to be brighter. I need to focus on singing out my eyebrows. Another thing that I think will help me is speaking the text and slowly adding more singing to my speech so I can get the same feeling of speaking when I sing. It will make my performance more natural rather than robotic.
Bric! Well done. I really like the quality of your voice and didn't find it dark at all. I thought it was a nice balance of bright and dark. I loved your clear diction. I think your biggest thing is breath (as it is for all of us!). I think you just need to find that deeper breath and ride it like a wave. Remember to expand through your back and all the way down to the floor. Something that helps me is Cindy's glottis trick where you put your fingers in front of your throat like a V and expand them as you take a breath of surprise. That always helps me find that more expansive low breath. Great job!
ReplyDeleteBric, there are really a lot of great things happening in your video. I think you had some beautiful phrasing in the beginning. They were shaped according to the importance of the text. Great work! I have the same problem you are describing with having the resonance being felt in your body, rather than falling in front of you, or as you say, "Coming out of your eyebrows". I think that your resonance was falling in front of you more than it wasn't. If that makes sense. I think it would aid you to not over think it, and just focus on the text, and the story you are telling.
ReplyDeleteYou have clear timbre in this performance that is pretty consistent. I also liked the shaping in the phrases. Another thing I liked was the precision in the diction as well. The vowels were clear, but the consonants were, too, so I had no trouble understanding the words. I sensed that there was a little tension in the shoulders and the neck when you were singing. That will only be a road block, so when you are practicing just try to give your shoulders and neck something else to do so they won't be able to tense up like that.
ReplyDeleteBric you sound awesome and your tone quality is really nice and stays the same throughout the performance. One thing to work on would be the release of tension in your voice. It looks like when you breath is when your tension comes in. Just be aware of that.
ReplyDeleteI really loved the clarity of the diction you put into the piece; it was very understandable and I had no trouble figuring out what you were saying. I noticed some breath problems that could start with a change in posture--your sternum a little low, and I think raising it just a little will open up your ribcage. At the end of the notes/phrases, try keeping the breath flowing to reduce tension in the throat. You use a glottal stop sometimes to end your pitches. Your high notes sometimes go a tad flat, but keeping a frontal resonance in the mask should help that. A little more engagement in the eyes/cheeks area will help with the expression and raising the soft palette. Overall, I thought it was a very good performance--I can tell you practiced this song well and you know what you were doing.
