Chapter Summary: During Part II, we are going to be introduced to six inventions that will enable us to produce a more beautiful, resonant, and clear sound in our singing. A big part in these inventions is figuring out and finding our chiaroscuro balance, or "bright-dark" balance. The author refers to our phonation as chiaro and our air flow as oscuro. Along with chiaroscuro, the four qualifiers of speech (projection, line, defined vowels, and our whole instrument) will be addressed. This is so we can recognize the difference between spoken speech and singing speech and learn how to do both correctly.
Key Concept: Finding our chiaroscuro balance is critical for effective singing.
Key Terms: Inventions, chiaroscuro balance, core, projection, line, defined vowels, our whole instrument
Making Connections: There's been times throughout my voice journey that I have focused more on the chiaro part of my voice than the oscuro and vice versa. I even felt like singing more in my chiaro was better singing. Reading this helped to understand the relationship between the two and the importance of finding a good balance between them.
