Laura B SS Chapter 3

Chapter Summary: Breathing is the essence of life. Through the way we breath, we can calm our emotions, focus our minds, and eliminate pain. There are many different methods that we come across that inform us about breathing effectively in our singing. However, these simply describe what happens when we breath correctly and not how to do so to sing right. When we speak, our body knows exactly how much air to supply unconsciously depending on the length of the phrase and the emotion used. Singing does require overall more breath, but we do not have to take a huge breath, no matter what the length of the phrase is. In order to breath correctly, our bodies must be in alignment in such a way that does not create tension and that allows maximum air capacity. Instead of thinking about having correct breath support, we should instead think about having a consistent air flow throughout the body. 'Support' tends to connote tension while 'flow' allows for the necessary release needed in the body while singing.
Key Concept: Only take as much breath as you're going to use for each phrase.
Key Terms: Breath, inspiration, inhalation, diaphragm, abdomen, good body alignment, exhalation, breath support, airflow, undulation,
Making Connections: Breathing correctly is something that I struggle with, as well as so many other singers do. I have always just figured that I do not have the support that I need. After reading the author's view on support. Breathing in singing makes much more sense to me. I need to maintain a constant flow in my body while singing instead of trying to create pressure in my body to get through phrases.
