Summary: When we are happily dedicated to our own image of our mediocrity we remain convinced that mediocre is all we will ever be. We hold ourselves to such a high standard of perfection that we happily see all the little mistakes that make us mediocre. We won't see this same mediocrity in others because we don't hold them to the same high standards we hold ourselves to. We must be careful not to become addicted to our problems or let our problems become a security blanket that covers us because we are too afraid of what we could become if we ditched the security blanket and lived up the the amazing inside of us:
Key Concept: Evaluate the beliefs that you hold about yourself. Think about your problems and ask yourself if you are holding on to them and why.
Connections: I like the ideas presented in this chapter. So many of us are happily content to be mediocre and a lot of times it is because we are afraid of being great. I watched my little sister complain for so long that she was terrible at the piano and wanted to quit but when my mom finally told her she could quit she suddenly didn't want to quit anymore. I think this is a good example of someone who was addicted to her problems. After she was presented with the option of quitting she all of a sudden redoubled her efforts and stopped saying she was bad at the piano. I think all of her complaining was just a way of getting attention as well as wanting someone to reaffirm to her that she had a decision to make in this whole ordeal. She could be addicted to her problems and never progress or she could decide to live up to the greatness inside of her.
