Emily F. SS 8: "The Wobble", Smith's fifth invention, is designed to help the voice achieve flexibility. This exercise uses an interval of a fourth to allow the cords to be loose and switch lengths freely. "In The Wobble, airflow is active and phonation is passive."
Key concept: The Wobble teaches flexibility and ability to give up control of the larynx.
Key terms: wobble, flexibility, vulnerability, fioratura
Making connections: When I sang through this exercise my voice felt tired afterwards. I don't know if I'm trying to control too much, but it does feel challenging to me. I imagine there should be some movement in the larynx, with the rocking of the cartilages, but I feel like it should be a smoother transition. Maybe I'm not engaging enough airflow to make it simple. It feels like work in my larynx.
