Emily F. SS 6: We experience pendulum effects in our voices and lessons. Because we want to "correct" our problems, we focus on one area and thus lose the balance we really want in our voices. The arpeggio on ni-ne-na-no-nu is a balancing exercise, used in the middle part of the range, to combine natural speech and unrestricted airflow.
Key concept: Balance is as important in singing as it is in life.
Making connections: The arpeggio exercise seems really simple. I practiced it alongside the CD and found it "unentangled". I like the idea of beginning in a speech range, with that speech-like feel, because that's something I really struggle with. When the exercise got higher, though, I could feel myself switching to my artificial "singing" voice, so I can see that this exercise would need to be done in the middle range until I get better at it. Ugh, balance is so hard to find in singing! I suppose if it were easy, we'd all have it figured out by now.
