Emily F. masterclass 10/15

Emily F. masterclass 10/15:
Brooke Meyers: Breathing seemed pretty good, but because you were behind the piano, it was hard to see a lot of what was going on. Timbre was really nice today, it didn't sound as forced as it sometimes does. Seemed mostly free, with some jaw tension sometimes. I didn't understand or hear the consonants well-- German needs lots of consonants! Expression was hard to read or see without being memorized. Cindy worked on being able to access the higher pitches without reaching for or punching them. I liked the idea of "fingering" for the voice. Use your agreeable speaking voice to practice lots.
LaeKin Burgess: You seemed quite energized and fairly released today. Your timbre was really free and lovely today! Maybe it was the relaxed masterclass setting, but your vibrato was more consistent than I've heard, and the quality of the timbre was better. The German sounded great to me, and I can tell you've put a lot of work into getting all those words together--nice! Cindy helped with the idea of feeling the beat rather than counting it. And the open space with a closed vowel visual is a great one that seemed to help.
me: I wish I could feel the amount of change that apparently I get out of my sound when I have a coach. I have to trust the reaction of the audience because I don't feel much different, and I can't hear much difference either. The feedback I got from friends today was a bigger indicator of what I was doing than anything I felt. I recognize that I overthink and try to "do" so much when I sing, and when I sing well it feels ridiculously easy. It's a little discouraging because I feel so old, with overly myelinated singing habits, and I know where my habits have come from, and mostly what they are. I'd just like to be able to change them faster.  Speaking through the text a million times is always helpful to me, so I need to value that more than I have before.
