Emily F. ER 15

Emily F. ER 15: When we are constantly practicing how to be great singers, we can forget the wonder and fun that is available to us in our voices. Improvisation and experimentation are great tools for keeping our craft fresh and interesting. Trying different instruments and techniques can help us get out of a vocal "rut", where we might be myelinating bad habits.
Key concept: Don't be afraid to be childlike with my voice, experimenting and discovering.
Making connections: Today I was analyzing a piece for theory homework, and I listened to it several times. I liked it and found it interesting, Later, when I was in the kitchen, I just started singing it, not having vocalized or warmed up at all. It starts with an A5, a note I can hit when I warm up, but not easily in a piece, and certainly not in performance! I just let it fly and it was easy and free and fun. I laughed at myself, because I wasn't thinking, just doing what felt fun at the moment. I usually get nervous when asked to improvise, scat, sing jazz, etc. I don't like it, but maybe that's because I haven't given myself permission to experiment with my voice much. I think it could be beneficial to play around with timbres and different kinds of music, as well as different instruments.
