Emily C.: TNV, Intro Pt. 1

The Naked Voice: Intro Pt. I
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: Culturally, we are expected to “cover up” and conform to the conventions of the times--however, when we perform, being able to present ourselves without reservation or worry about how others perceive us gives us the ability to genuinely connect with the audience and help others to realize their own authenticity. “Through this process of stripping away, we grow up. We question the values, rules, and expectations that have been given to us, and we reject them, modify them, or embrace them as our own.” Essentially, it’s not being that matters--it’s the process of becoming

Key Concepts: The pursuit of authenticity focuses on clearing away insecurities, habits, and fears that prevents us from performing at our best. Everyone has a desire to be authentic--to be true to themselves.

Key Terms: “the naked voice,” authenticity, pursuit

Making Connections: I found Smith’s statements to be very true in this introduction, because when I get up to perform, I tend to be quite reserved--I need to learn how to open up and embrace the experience, live in the moment, and let the audience get to know me as an individual.
