Emily C.: TNV, Ch. 6

The Naked Voice: Chapter 6
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: Healthy and beautiful singing comes from a balance between chiaro and oscuro. Use the arpeggio as an exercise to help find balance--start in the natural speaking range and let the air take over as the pitches get higher (like a sigh). Perform the arpeggios near or on the passagio, keeping the voice relaxed and maintaining consistent airflow. “Going a bit past the comfortable range forces us to give in to the air.” In vowel definition, even when changing vowels from a more forward one to a back one, we need to keep the base of the tongue high and back. Legato line and breathflow are both crucial to the success of resonance consistency in different vowel sounds.

Key Concepts: Balance between chiaro and oscuro is the key to healthy and beautiful singing. We can achieve this balance through the use of breathflow, legato line, and vowel consistency. Throughout all of the exercises, it’s crucial to keep your voice relaxed and keep air flowing as it would in a sigh.

Key Terms: overcorrecting, balance, passagio

Making Connections: The last section of the chapter that addresses vowel definition and maintaining resonance consistency with the change of vowels was very familiar to me because I have been working on that with Brianna in my lessons lately. She had warned me that my [a] vowel and my other back vowels were too low in the throat because my tongue wasn’t relaxed and high in the back. So we work on transitioning from [i] to [e] to [a] slowly.
