Emily Cottam
10/21/13 Lesson
Today was a makeup lesson because Brianna needs to get all of our lessons in before she leaves. We went over the importance of staying out of the throat and singing more in the head, keeping my vibrato high and with no throat tension or edge. I need to keep the sensation of having a very open throat and maintaining a more simplistic sound for now, especially when it comes to exercising my higher notes and staying in the position of the inhale. With my warm ups, I need to start small and easy and master it that way so I can engage my full body later. We moved on from working on resonance with the “ee” vowel to the “oo” vowel to keep headiness. We did an arpeggio exercise on “who’s new blue shoes” to practice this. We worked on “Pieta Signore” today, and focused a lot on tracheal tug. We used the exercise band to help illustrate the sort of engagement I need to feel when I sing. This helps not only with breath engagement but also musicality and shaping of phrases. I also need to work on my double consonants in my Italian.
