This may sound like I'm an unwilling learner, but I wasn't surprised by anything in the video. All of the problems I thought I was having were there in the video! I got into a habit of videoing my myself at least once a week my freshman year, and I think that's a contributing factor.
Good things:
generally engaging face
not a note by note approach, I guess
French is good
Bad things:
I can tell when my eyes check out when a hard part is coming. I want to reduce that.
I also blink a lot, but I already am aware of that annoying problem
I also would like more stillness and calm in my body. But I also want to be dance-like....what is a soprano to do??
In this video, my tone wasn't in a high, sneezy spot at all. Larynx was involved quite a bit. Not the best performance ever...

Hey Elizabeth, you have such a great timbre: mature and vibrant. Good work on the French. I'm doing Clair de Lune too but by Faure and the diction is one of the hardest parts, so that was nice to hear it done well. I agree your eyes checked out on a specific harder part toward the end but other than that they were good. The fast high notes seemed a little tight, so you could work on opening them up more. Your neck tensed up on some of the higher notes as well. After one specific high note, you had a recovery moment. Overall, it was very well done.
ReplyDeleteI really love the timbre in your voice! I loved the consistency it had. Regardless of what pitch you were singing and regardless of what vowel you were on your voice still had a full, energetic quality to it. I thought the diction was good, but I would love to hear a little bit more of the consonants. This is a pretty difficult song to sing as far as breathing is concerned. I think you handled it pretty well, but there were a couple of quick breaths where I saw too much shoulder involvement. Overall, lovely singing
ReplyDeleteI appreciated the upbeat and happy introduction. Your french is great, so there's that. Your timbre is pretty consistent throughout your range which was very effective in this piece. One of the high notes looked and sounded uneasy but other than that consistency was good.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your jaw in this. It wasn't tensed, and it wasn't forced open. I did notice that you seemed to squeeze out the end of your phrases a little bit. Also there needs to be more of a connection between the high range and the low range.
