Sam and I had our partner practice yesterday, and I found it quite helpful and effective.
We began by practicing my memory, and going over text. Sam was able to help me finish memorizing a piece, and test me on others. My accompanist came, and while we went through the pieces, Sam marked passages that I struggled with, or rhythms that weren't solid. I found it very helpful.
We then switched to Sam's practice. Cindy had talked about speaking a phrase, and then singing it, so we tried that. It really added a new element of shape and contour to each of this phrases. His voice was freer, but I still saw his shoulders curling inwards whenever a phrase began ascending to the high E in Bon Nuit. So he faced the wall, and leaned forward while I pulled his arms in the opposite direction. The E came out in a much simpler place, and it sounded much easier. The approach to the E was much more graceful as well. Lastly, we talked about thinking of thoughts or things that he likes to do that give him a sense of freedom. I think this will help him as he is practicing by himself.
