Brooke’s Recital Hour critiques-
Emily Floyd-
Love her expressions and she looks very professional and beautiful. When she got to the slower part I liked her tone a lot better. She was able to carry that through to the next fast part so the breathiness in the first part was probably nerves. I just want her to open and drop her jaw a bit more on some of her held out notes. Also I feel as though her tongue was getting in the way of her voice. For this I actually grab my tongue in the practice room and sing while holding it (I know gross) but it helps me realize where my tongue is wanting to pull back, and I can make a conscious effort on those spots to pay attention to what my tongue is doing. Over all her performance was beautifully done and I really enjoyed watching it.
Alex Barlow-
Alex’s diction is really good especially her “ich”. Her tone is beautiful and full and rich. What I would ask Alex to do is to connect her high voice to her low voice. She has so much tension in her neck that if she would connect to her entire body and just relax it would help her so much. Her intonation was spot on but her breathing just a little bit of help. We would call her a bucket breather and she just needs to make the switch to a balloon breather.
Hannah Lavato-
I absolutely loved her expression especially at the beginning you could tell she knew what she was talking about. And I was proud of her for stopping and talking to the accompanist, and she did it in a very professional manner. Her high notes sounded very free her low notes she had to lower her chest to where it looked like her chin was touching her chest and it was a bit odd to watch and see. My suggestion would be to watch herself sing in a mirror and see if she can find other ways to hit those. But overall her performance was very nicely done and professional.
Alyssa Robbins
You could tell she was very nervous and but she was able to get all her notes and have a nice tone, which I would describe and bright and melodious. It was also fun to see the difference of her voice when she went from the legato part to the fast part. During the fast part I saw she had more emotion and vigor and I loved watcher her especially then because of her energy that she brought. My suggestion for her would be to work on her diction. It just need to have taller vowels and a more focused sound. If she really stuck out her lips around her vowels I believe it would help solve those two problems. Her voice is young and immature but has lots of potential and I am excited to see what she does with it.
Sara Low-
I love the way Sarah sings it almost has an innocence about it. Her French may not have been perfect but I was able to understand the syllables she was singing. There were a couple times in the song that I felt she ran out of breath a little bit, so I started paying attention to her breath and she definitely was breathing with her chest most of the time. I think her sound would be much better if she took a better breath.
