Chapter summary: This chapter is about the second invention: free flowing air. This invention can also be broken up into phases. The first phase is the downward sigh. In this phase/exercise, one starts high with a falsetto voice on an [o], then descends, keeping the falsetto as long as possible. When falsetto is no longer possible, one switches to an [a] by relaxing the lips. The second phase is the siren. One starts low on [a], ascends to the upper voice, then descends on an [o]. This helps loosen the vocal folds. The third phase is the descending 5-tone scale. One starts with an [a] at speaking level, then slides to the highest pitch level attained in the previous exercise descending on an [o] (5-tone scale). These are the phases of the second invention.
Key points: The second invention is going the opposite direction of the first; the oscuro rather than chiaro, and less engagement of the vocal folds.
Key terms: oscuro, chiaro, falsetto
Making connections: This is the invention that I think would help me the most. In singing, I tend to have too much engagement. In my lessons and practice, I've used the second phase, and I've found that it helps.
