Master class 10-15-'13
Brooke Meyers
Oh man do I love that resonant spinning round sound in the higher she goes. The lower registers are a brighter the lower she goes. ... interesting.
Aha! The first phrase in the song is in a hard transition point for the voice.
Solutions today for Brooke:
Think for/have awareness of the highest not of the phrase so that you're not reaching for it. Come down on that puppy, don't reach up for it.
The next fun exercise: Physically bend over/down at the highest note in the phrase as you sing it. This works because it distracts us from over thinking that hard spot we need to get through and leaves us free to just do it.
Good job Brooke.
Laekin Burgess
Laekin's voice has this distinct glassy quality that I can only describe as "round" and it is quite consistent.
The challenge today was re-learning some of the phrases the right way. The concept given here was that if you learned something wrong, you have to repeat it many more times over the right way to get it back to where it needs to be (Myelinating new circuits int he right pathway).
Laekin was such an incredible good sport and we all had fun doing the exercises with her to get back on rhythm and address specific challenges in the text that were apparently throwing her off.
Key concept today: Scary is different than hard. Ex: It is scary, but much easier to repel down the face of a cliff that to climb up that D**m rock!
Good job Laekin. That was fun for all of us.
