Caitlin C. Voice Lesson 2/27/14

I was super emotional on Thursday, so my lesson was cut short because I kind of hit a wall and couldn't sing anymore. However, we did do a few warm-ups before Ali came for the last half hour.

We started on E5 lip buzzing on 87654321. It felt tight and controlled. I think my tongue was tight, cause I could hear some of that edginess in the tone.
We then tried the "abcd, thee" 54321. Brianna asked for me to speak in a higher place, so I tried to do that, and I think it was successful most of the time.
We then switched to 8531, and for the most part I was speaking in the right place. However, because I had been crying earlier in the day and because I was exhausted, I had no energy in my body.
Brianna asked me about my song analysis forms, and about how my memorization is going. I told her it was coming along, and that I had tried to be diligent in it this past week.
Brianna's baby started crying so she needed to take him out of the room.
She came back and we tried "[li] [le] [la] [lo]" 534231271. We only got through a few pretty terrible repetitions before Ali arrived.
Ali and I ran through "Mandoline". It was honky and pretty horrible.
Brianna came back in the room and we tried singing through a few phrases. She noted that my vibrato was getting weird, and that it was stuck/covered.
She suggested we sing a different song. So we tried to sing "Pupille amate". That was a disaster. And it wasn't gonna get any better no matter what tool Brianna tried to give me. I started crying, and then Brianna talked to me about how we all have bad days where we hit a wall and can't sing. I felt no connection to my lower body. Brianna decided to cut the lesson short so that I could go home and sleep, and try to recover from my rough day.

My goals this week: I want to practice in a way that promotes success (keeping the bottom of my teeth parallel to the floor). I also want to think about singing as something I enjoy doing, rather than a task.
