Emily C., Voice Lesson Summary, 3/17/14
Today was memory check, so I just recited my pieces, their translations, and then sang them.
For the last 15 minutes or so of the lesson, we decided that I can drop “Pur dicesti,” and I will use this next week to decide which three of my four remaining pieces I should keep.
We worked on “Oh, quand je dors,” and Brianna kept telling me to have the sensation of being “round” and having a supported breath. She told me that my vibrato isn’t down in my throat anymore, but it’s still stuck too far back in my head. She told me that I need to experiment with “smelling the roses” and having a “smell space” while singing. Then she told me to practice on “hnnnggg ahhh” this week and to experiment with mask resonance.
I got really confused because she had me sing “ahh” on a random note, experimenting with different resonance/space positions, and whenever she told me she liked a certain one, I felt like I was singing shallow or constricted(?) in the back of my throat. I told her it felt like I was closed in the back and open in the front, rather than the other way around. So it messed me up when she told me that was what she meant by being “open.”
I’m going to experiment with the feeling of “no feeling” in the throat (and no sensation of subglottic pressure!) this week, especially because I have a strong tendency to be hyperfunctional in my singing.
