Chapter 6 Summary-Each brain is unique. Therefore, each person learns differently. As a result some musicians are proficient in some facets of music that may not cause problems at all for other musicians. Everyone has their weaknesses and it can be very easy for students to become discouraged over what seems to be their one insurmountable flaw. It is important in these situations for the teacher to be encouraging and to be diligent in finding a solution to the problem. It is often the case that the cause for these areas of shocking difficulty is exceptional strength in some other area of music learning. For example, one is is proficient at sight-reading may have trouble memorizing pieces. In either case, these perceptual problems can be fixed through practicing other skills such as juggling.
Key Concept-Each student is different. The problems one student has, therefore, will in many cases differ from those had by another student. Realizing what makes one student strong in a certain area can be helpful in identifying a meaningful solutions for students who struggle in that area. Specific struggles often have a close relationship with areas in which a student excels.
Key Terms-Perceptual Problems
Making Connections- As a teacher it is important for me to pay close attention to the struggles that each one of my students have. Taking into account the strengths of one student may be the key to helping a different student overcome his/her problems in that area.
